Spelling, Fluency and Vocabulary is the third module in the Effective Instruction in Reading and Spelling unit.

Participants are presented with the research on teaching spelling, fluency and vocabulary and the role they play in developing children’s literacy skills. Further, activities and assessments are presented that can easily be integrated into classroom practice.

The importance of teaching students to apply phonological, morphological, orthographic and etymological knowledge when spelling words is covered. Reading fluency is related to reading comprehension, but proficient word readers do not automatically become fluent readers. Participants are provided with evidence-based strategies that can be applied in the classroom to help students develop reading fluency.

Vocabulary, another one of the Five Big Ideas of Reading, is further covered in this module. It focuses on the importance of providing age-appropriate definitions, multiple exposures to word and contextual information and participation in active processing activities.

The module presents information on the most effective way for teachers to plan and sequence oral language, phonemic awareness and phonics programs.

What the module covers

  • Language-based spelling instruction
  • How to design effective spelling instruction using phonology, morphology, orthography and etymology
  • Information on different ways to assess and score spelling
  • The relationship between oral reading fluency (ORF) and reading comprehension
  • How to mark and score an ORF assessment
  • How to select words and implement rich and robust vocabulary instruction
  • How to design effective vocabulary instruction for the whole class and adapt instruction for students requiring additional support
