Participants start learning how to apply strategies that have been shown by research to be effective teaching methods. Oral Language, a key component of the Simple View of Reading and the underlying foundation that binds the Five Big Ideas of Reading together, is discussed in more detail.

Phonemic Awareness is also covered. Participants discover which tasks are most important for reading and how to help beginning readers develop phonemic awareness.

The module presents information on the most effective way for teachers to plan and sequence oral language, phonemic awareness, and phonics programs to promote word reading.

Finally, this module provides a grounding in phonics instruction and word reading. Systematic synthetic phonics is discussed, highlighting the importance of teaching beginning readers how graphemes map to phonemes as this is the most effective way to teach students to read new words.

What the module covers

  • How oral language ability contributes to reading
  • How language disorders impact reading ability
  • Strategies to promote oral language development in the classroom
  • Evidence-based strategies to teach phonemic awareness
  • The variety of phonemic awareness assessments
  • The process of orthographic mapping
  • The different ways the term ‘sight words’ can be used
  • The rationale for a systematic and synthetic approach to teaching phonics
  • How to conduct formative assessments of phonics knowledge
