Foundations in the Science of Reading and Effective Instruction (Module 1) is the first module in the Effective Instruction in Reading and Spelling course.
Participants learn about the research base for the Science of Reading and the different fields of study that have contributed to the evidence that makes up this body of research. The difference between evidence-based and evidence-informed practice is explained, and participants learn to evaluate when the practices can be applied to their instructional context.
This module forms the foundation for further courses addressing the Five Big Ideas of reading instruction. Participants learn about the Response to Intervention model, the essential elements of reading, and how evidence-based instructional strategies can be used to teach curriculum content in an explicit and systematic way.
The importance of Positive Teaching is also emphasised, and techniques on how to use praise and manage classroom behaviour effectively are discussed. Participants also learn the features of the effective teaching cycle.
Included in this module is an ebook of the textbook Effective Instruction in Reading and Spelling (Wheldall, Wheldall & Buckingham).
