Academy leaders named among world’s top scholars

May 27, 2024

The Academy for the Science of Instruction congratulates its founding members, Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall AM and Dr Mark Carter, who have both been named among the top 1 per cent of scholars worldwide.

Emeritus Professor Wheldall has been ranked 34th in the field of special education, placing him in the top .05 per cent of scholars globally, according to ScholarGPS.

Dr Carter has been ranked 45th – also in the field of special education – placing him in the top 1 per cent globally.

ScholarGPS recognises tertiary institutions and academics for their outstanding performance in various fields, disciplines and specialities. Rankings are based on publication record, as well as impact and quality of academic work.

“It’s pleasing – but not surprising – to see Emeritus Professor Wheldall and Dr Carter recognised as among the top performers in their field worldwide,” said Academy Director, Iain Rothwell

“Between them, they have hundreds of publications and thousands of citations, which demonstrates the influence they have in special education and education more broadly.

“It also underlines the depth of the knowledge, expertise and research credentials that exists within the newly established Academy for the Science of Instruction, which is seeking to fill an essential gap for evidence-based education for teachers that will assist them to have more impact in the classroom.”

Launched in July, The Academy provides teachers with in-depth units of study across a broad range of subject content in the science of instruction, with an initial focus on effective instruction in reading and spelling and positive classroom behaviour management
