Foundations and Principles
Positive Teaching for Effective Classroom Behaviour Management has been developed to train teachers in the skills and methods necessary for creating a positive learning environment and implementing Tier 1 classroom management strategies. This module is soundly based on empirical classroom research and specifically developed for primary schools.
For those seeking to understand foundational principles of Positive Teaching, this module provides an introduction to a reliable behaviour management system, including strategies designed to increase time spent on-task, facilitating improved academic performance, and create a more positive classroom environment.
Most teachers are well aware of the importance of using positive reinforcement strategies in their classrooms to manage student behaviour. Research undertaken by members of The Academy indicates, however, that most teacher praise is largely focused on academic performance. Positive Teaching emphasises the importance of contingent praise related to classroom social behaviour which increases the time spent on-task, leading to improved academic performance.
Positive Teaching for Effective Classroom Behaviour Management introduces participants to Tier 1 classroom management strategies designed to ensure students are ready to receive instruction, to help teachers to focus on maintaining maximal opportunities to learn and to facilitate an effective and positive learning environment.
While there are no strict prerequisite requirements for the modules in this course, we recommend following the suggested study pathways:
Positive Teaching for Effective Classroom Behaviour Management is based on the extensive research of Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall AM and Dr Robyn Wheldall (Beaman) of Macquarie University and on the earlier research of Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall and Dr Frank Merrett at the Centre for Child Study, University of Birmingham.
Research areas included identifying the most troublesome disruptive classroom behaviour in Australian primary school classrooms, observing primary teachers’ use of approval and disapproval for academic and social behaviour in the classroom, quantifying the effect of classroom seating arrangements on student time spent ‘on task’ and measuring the effect of implementing the strategies of Positive Teaching classroom behaviour management.
All registered training participants will receive a complimentary copy of the academic book Positive Teaching for Australian Primary Schools: Effective classroom behaviour management by Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall AM, Dr Robyn Wheldall and Dr Frank Merrett.
Positive teaching, a model of positive reinforcement based on the principles of applied behaviour analysis, utilises high rates of teacher praise and dramatically decreases teacher reprimands. By focusing on appropriate behaviour and ignoring inappropriate behaviour, maximum learning takes place. Classrooms that employ the principles of Positive Teaching have much higher rates of on-task behaviour.
These modules would benefit classroom teachers, school counsellors, psychologists and education professionals and leaders.
Yes, all Positive Teaching and Learning modules are self-paced eLearning modules. You can study at your own pace and start whenever is convenient.
The Positive Teaching for Effective Classroom Management module is Teacher Quality Institute ACT accredited (10 hrs).
There are no prerequisites for Positive Teaching and Learning modules. However, we do suggest following the recommended course structure, and note that the Foundations of Behaviour and Function-based Thinking is an excellent foundation for both the Teaching for Positive Behaviour Change, and Assessment and Measurement of Behaviour pathways.
