WHAT WE DO

The Academy offers modular courses for education professionals

Launched in 2024, The Academy for the Science of Instruction was founded to provide comprehensive courses focused on essential knowledge related to the Science of Instruction. The Academy currently offers modular courses in Effective Instruction in Reading and Spelling as well as Positive Teaching and Learning.

The Academy was founded in response to the growing recognition of the importance of delivering evidence-based instruction to improve learning outcomes in Australian schools, as well as to help address essential knowledge-gaps identified in reviews of Initial Teacher Education.

To provide teachers and education professionals with the information and understanding to address these challenges, The Academy for the Science of Instruction aims to develop courses and content to address these instructional needs.

Drawing on extensive academic research and expertise, Academy courses expand teaching professionals’ knowledge and skill in delivering effective instruction underpinned by scientific research.

We seek to provide teachers with the very best, scientifically supported knowledge and information in an interesting and accessible format.

We draw on our extensive expertise in the Science of Instruction to create evidence-based content that is practical and applicable in a classroom context.

We believe teachers are essential to student success and seek to provide the tools and knowledge to empower them to deliver effective instruction with impact.

We continually evaluate global research and scientific knowledge in the Science of Instruction and incorporate these findings in our course content.

The Academy draws on decades of research, expertise and an expansive body of scientific knowledge that is continually updated by our highly-regarded instructional scientists.

The Academy’s rigorous academic governance structure guides its ongoing development and operation, and course presenters and developers are leading researchers and experts in their fields. The Dean, Dr Mark Carter, formerly an Associate Professor of Macquarie University, provides leadership to The Academy.

ACADEMIC BOARD

Respected academic leadership

To ensure the quality of our courses, an Academic Board oversees the development of The Academy for the Science of Instruction, led by the esteemed Emeritus Professor Kevin Wheldall AM.

Leadership of The Academy is provided by Dr Mark Carter who has been appointed as Dean.

The Academy for the Science of Instruction delivers rigorously researched course content developed by an impressive team of highly qualified and experienced academics, researchers, specialists and educators.

Frequently asked questions

The Academy has developed courses suitable for qualified education professionals and teachers. Courses are also suitable for counsellors, school psychologists and education leaders.

Currently The Academy offers courses that are accredited by NESA and TQI. In the longer term, The Academy proposes to establish nested postgraduate programs of study addressing the science of effective instruction.

In the Effective Instruction in Reading and Spelling course, all four modules are NESA and TQI accredited. In Positive Teaching and Learning, the Positive Teaching for Effective Classroom Management module is TQI accredited.
